Pac-10 Women’s Basketball Report by WFG (Week of 2/17)

Author:

World Financial Group Pac-10 fans have been enjoying this season of women’s basketball.  It’s really no surprise considering that seven different players are listed in six NCAA Division-I statistical rankings and seven of the teams are ranked nationally in at least one statistical category.  Shoot (sorry, bad pun), Stanford is tops in the nation in the rebound margin category, averaging +12.9 a game.

In last week’s action, Arizona State and Oregon State broke out their brooms and swept the greater Los Angeles universities and the Washington schools, respectively.  Arizona lost at UCLA, but emerged victorious opposite USC.  Washington State may have lost against Oregon State, but left the Oregon game as a winner.  Oregon, however, came from behind to beat Washington.  And Stanford had little trouble handling California on Valentine’s Day.  Were any WFG members at any games this weekend?  We’d love to know.

The polls agreed on two schools.  Both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls show Stanford at number four and California at number six.  But the AP also has room for one more Pac-10 school: Arizona State rounds out the top 25 at, well, number 25.  In the ESPN/USA today poll, ASU received 16 votes (around 28th place).  Maybe next week the Sun Devils can find themselves higher in both polls.

This week’s women’s hardwood action started on Thursday, February 19.  And World Financial Group fans watched these games:

  • The Oregon Ducks played the California Golden Bears in Berkeley.  Oregon hoped to build on their one game win streak while California wanted to end their one game losing streak.  This one wasn’t even close as California senior forward Ashley Walker led the Bears to an 84-42 victory with 24 points and eleven rebounds.  Oregon shot just 30.6% from the floor all evening.
  • The Oregon State Beavers also hit the road and visited the Stanford Cardinals.  Both teams boasted win streaks of two and seven games, respectively.  One streak had to fall, and it was Oregon State’s: Stanford won their 18th straight against the Beavers by a score of 72-43.  Junior center Jayne Appel and freshman forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike each had 15 points.  OSU’s Brittney Davis scored 12 for their team.

On Friday, February 20, WFG Pac-10 fans followed these hoop displays:

  • The UCLA Bruins visited Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies.  UCLA hoped to end their one game losing streak while Washington seeks to end its 12 game slide.  Washington’s defense forced 23 turnovers as the Huskeis won by a score of 59-49.  UCLA feshman guard Atonye Nyingifa had her first double-double of the season with 14 points and ten rebounds.
  • The USC Trojans paid a visit to the Pacific Northwest to play the Washington State Cougars.  Both teams hoped to end their slides of two games and one game, respectively.  The Trojans, led by senior guard Camille LeNoir’s 15 points, eked out a 66-57 win.  WSU’s senior center Ebonee Coates had 13 rebounds in the loss.

Saturday, February 21 saw a World Financial Group-sponsored Pac-10 intra-state rivalry.  The Arizona State Sun Devils traveled to Tucson to take on the Arizona Wildcats.  Arizona State hopes to add to their 11 game win streak while Arizona hopes to build on their recent win against USC.  This game was close, but ASU won 60-53 on junior guard Dymond Simon’s 18 point game.  Arizona sophomore forward Ify Ibekwe had 20 rebounds in the loss.

Also playing on Saturday:

  • Oregon visited Stanford and the Cardinals won 68-49.  Cardinal junior center Jayne Appel is currently 7th place in all time blocked shots in the Pac-10.  Oregon junior Micaela Cocks leads the Pac-10 this season in three point field goals made with 43% accuracy.
  • Oregon State traveled to California for a game on FSN.  The Golden Bears won 62-40.  California senior center Ashley Walker became the first women’s Golden Bear to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.  OSU player Cedes Fox-Griffin is second in the Pac-10 in free throw percentage, hitting .879 from the charity stripe.
WFG fans will followed these games on Sunday, February 22:
  • UCLA played Washington State, with UCLA winning 65-50
  • USC visited Washington and won 77-43

For the fourth time this season, Stanford junior center Jayne Appel has earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors.  She shot 70% from the floor in the Cardinals win over California last week along with earning her 10th double-double of the season.  Not to mention that she has helped Stanford win 25 straight games at home.  Way to go, Jayne, from your friends at World Financial Group!

Pac-10 Men’s Basketball Report by World Financial Group (Week of 2/17)

Posted: 27. February 2009 09:11
Author:

March Madness looms ever closer.  With two weeks remaining in February, World Financial Group fans are on the edge of our seats to see who might emerge from the Pac-10 into the final four.  Half the Pac-10 teams boast conference records above .500 and the race for first place is very close.  Over one million spectators have caught a Pac-10 Men’s Basketball game live and eleven have been sellouts.

Let’s recap last week’s action.  Washington moved into first place all on their own with wins over Oregon and Oregon State.  Washington State was able to take a victory from Oregon, but lost to Oregon State.  Both Arizona and Arizona State swept the Los Angeles schools.  Finally, California topped Stanford in their lone Pac-10 contest.

In the polls, three WFG-sponsored Pac-10 schools are taking residence.  The highest ranked is the hot Arizona State.  They are tied for 11th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and the AP has them at 14.  UCLA, having lost two over the weekend, fell to 15 in the USA Today poll and 20 in the AP poll.  Washington continues to find poll real estate with rankings of 19 (ESPN) and 22 (AP).  Also receiving votes are California (29 ESPN, 30 AP) and Arizona (tied for 31 ESPN and 30 AP).  Hey, that’s half of the Pac-10 receiving national recognition.  Pretty cool!

This week, World Financial Group fans watched these games on Thursday, February 19:

  • The California Golden Bears traveled to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks.  California was working on a three game win streak while Oregon still sought to win their first Pac-10 game.  Led by sophomore forward Harper Kamp with 18 points, the Golden Bears won their 20th game of the season as they handed Oregon a 78-60 loss.  For the Ducks, Tajuan Porter scored 19 points.
  • The Stanford Cardinals visited the Oregon State Beavers.  Stanford hoped to snap a two game losing streak while Oregon State hoped to build on their one game win from last week – and they did!  Oregon State now has a two game win streak: junior forward/center Roeland Schaftenaar scored a season-high 26 points in their 66-54 win over the Cardinals.  Stanford’s point leader was Jeremy Green, with 19 in the second half.
  • The Washington Huskies took on the UCLA Bruins in LA.  When they arrived, Washington was on a three game win streak while UCLA hoped to snap their two game losing streak.  And the Bruins did so, led by Josh Shipp, Darren Collison, Nikola Dragovic and Alfred Aboya - who scored in double digits - to bring UCLA to a 85-76 win.  Washington forward Jon Brockman had 16 points and 14 rebounds for his 55th career double-double.  This is now the most rebounds among active players in college basketball.
  • The Washington State Cougars visited the USC Trojans.  Both teams hoped to snap their one and three game losing streak.  But it was USC who came out the victor by a score of 61-51.  USC is 13-1 at home this season.  WSU player Taylor Rochestie scored 16 points.

Saturday, February 21 saw the following action, and WFG fans watched:

  • Washington State versus UCLA.   This was a close one, but WSU won 82-81 led by Taylor Rochestie’s 33 points.  UCLA Nikola Dragovic scored 23.
  • Washington versus USC.   The Huskies took this one 60-51, led by Quincy Pondexter’s 22 points.  Trojan player Daniel Hackett led USC with 11 points.
  • Stanford versus Oregon.  And Oregon finally wins in the Pac-10!  Duck player Michael Dunigan led Oregon scoring with 14 points, contributing to a 68-60.  Stanford’s Landry Fields led the Cardinals with 19 points on the hardwood.
  • California versus Oregon State.  And Oregon State wins this one 65-54, led by Calvin Haynes’ 19 points and four steals.  California’s Theo Robinson led Golden Bear scorers with 15 points.

And on Sunday, February 22, WFG fans watched the “duel in the desert” as the Arizona Wildcats travel to Tempe to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils.  One win streak will end, as Arizona has won their last seven to Arizona State’s last four.  And it was a close one.  Arizona State, led by James Harden’s 18 points, won over Arizona by a score of 70-68.  Wildcat Nic Wise led Arizona’s scoring drive with 17 points.

Pac-10 Player of the Week honors go to Arizona Wildcat junior guard Nic Wise.  Over the past two games, Nic has averaged 26.5 points a game along with three rebounds and two assists.  In addition, 62.5% percent of his shots from beyond the three point arc have scored. World Financial Group extends congratulations to this fine student athlete.

Pac-10 Women’s Basketball Report by WFG (Week of 2/24)

Posted: 27. February 2009 08:41
Author:

February is ending.  Which means March will start very soon.  With March comes spring and everything associated with the season: flowers in bloom, allergies, baseball and, of course, March Madness.  And the sports nuts at World Financial Group haven’t forgotten that women’s basketball plays a very important part in March Madness and can’t wait to experience it.

In last week’s hoop action, California and Stanford won easily against the Oregon universities.  USC swept both Washington and Washington State.  UCLA lost against Washington, but was able to beat Washington State.  Arizona State beat Arizona to determine who was tops in the Grand Canyon State.  And in non-conference action, Oregon State visited UC Santa Barbara and won 70-61, their tenth non-conference win of the year.

The polls have some disagreement between them.  According to the Associated Press, Stanford is at 3, California is at 4 and Arizona State (with a 12 game win streak going) is at 24.  But over at the ESPN/USA Today poll, Stanford is at 4, California is at 6 and ASU only received votes to come in around 28.  If it were up to WFG, they’d be in the poll outright, along with all the great Pac-10 teams.

Anyway, Thursday, Feb. 26 sees two Pac-10 contests (all times are local):
  • The Washington Huskies travel to Arizona State to play the Sun Devils.  Washington hopes not to extend their current losing streak to a second game.  Washington’s defense held UCLA to 29.8% shooting and 23 turnovers.  ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne became the thid coach in Pac-10 history to lead her squad to 20+ victories five years in a row.  This game tips off at 6:30 p.m.
  • The Washington State Cougars visit the Arizona Wildcats.  Both teams hope to halt losing streaks of three and one game, respectively.  WSU senior center Ebonee Coates was a rebounding machine last week, grabbing 13 of them against USC.  Arizona sophomore forward Ify Ibekwe leads the Pac-10 in rebounds, averaging 11.5 a game.  The hardwood sees action starting at 7 p.m.
On Friday, Feb. 27, World Financial Group sports fans will be following these games:
  • The California Golden Bears visit the USC Trojans.  Both teams hope to build on their respective two game win streak.  California coach Joanne Boyle has led her team to three straight 20+ win seasons.  USC defense showed strength against the Washington schools, forcing 21 turnovers against Washington and 24% shooting in the first half.  The hoops start to fly at 7 p.m.
  • The Stanford Cardinals will play the UCLA Bruins in LA.  The Cardinals have won their last nine while UCLA won its last game.  Stanford freshman forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 15 points last week against Oregon off the bench.  UCLA sophomore guard Doreena Campbell had 24 points against Washington State, including 10 from the charity stripe.  This game also tips off at 7 p.m.

The last day of February (the 28th) sees three WFG Pac-10 sponsored games:

  • The Oregon Ducks travels to Corvallis to take on the Oregon State Beavers.  Both teams hope to end their respective two game losing streaks.  OSU senior center Tiffany Drucker contributed four steals in the loss to Stanford.  Oregon had a pair of 10 point scorers last week in sophomore forward Ellie Manou and junior guard Taylor Lilley.  This battle for Oregon starts at 7 p.m.
  •  Washington versus Arizona at 1 p.m.
  • Washington State versus Arizona State at 4 p.m.
Sunday, March 1 sees hoop action with:
  • California versus UCLA at Noon with television coverage by FSN
  • Stanford versus USC also at Noon

The Pac-10 Player of the Week award goes to California’s senior forward Ashley Walker.  Ashley is currently the Pac-10’s leading scorer with 1,977 points and California’s career leading rebounder with 1,029.  This is also her 8th career Player of the Week award; one shy of the all-time record.  Way to go Ashley from your friends at World Financial Group!

World Financial Group Pac-10 Men’s Basketball Report (Week of 2/24)

Posted: 27. February 2009 08:35
Author:

It’s the end of February.  March Madness is just around the corner.  And sports fans at World Financial Group have been enjoying this season of Pac-10 men’s basketball.  With the Pac-10 tournament just two weeks away, every player is gearing up for the tournament and basketball fans are breaking out their brackets.  Who knows where this season will go before it is all over?

Last week’s action saw two very close games and the end of a long losing streak.  Oregon State swept the bay area schools of Stanford and California, but the Golden Bears were able to win against Oregon.  UCLA won at Washington, but lost at Washington State, while USC won at Washington State, but lost at Washington.  Arizona State squeaked by Arizona in a “duel in the desert” while the University of Oregon finally won in the Pac-10 by a 68-60 score against Stanford.

The polls show three Pac-10 schools in their top 25 with two additional WFG-sponsored Pac-10 schools looking in.  Arizona State finds itself at 11 in the ESPN/USA Today poll and at 14 in the AP.  UCLA is 19 with ESPN but 22 in the AP.  Washington is 21 in both the USA Today and AP polls.  Arizona finds itself receiving votes (32 ESPN, 29 AP) as well as California (33 USA Today, 34 AP).

World Financial Group basketball fans will be watching this hoop action on Thursday, Feb. 26: (All times are local.)
  • The Arizona Wildcats visit the Washington State Cougars.  Arizona hopes to rebound after their loss on Sunday while Washington State looks to add to that one game win streak.  Wildcat junior forward Chase Budinger’s on a hot streak, averaging 19.5 points a game in his last eight.  Cougar freshman guard Klay Thompson seeks to set a new WSU freshman record in three point field goals.  This game tips off at 7 p.m. with TV coverage provided by FSN NW and FSN AZ.
  • The nationally ranked Arizona State Sun Devils will take on the Washington Huskies in Seattle.  This will be closely watched as Washington holds a half game lead over Arizona State in the Pac-10 standings.  Sun Devil senior forward Jeff Pendergraph is on fire (please forgive me) over his last six games, averaging 15.2 points and 10.2 rebounds.  Washington junior forward Quincy Pondexter needs only nine more points to reach the 1,000 point mark, career wise.  The hardwood heats up at 8 p.m. with TV coverage on FSN NW and FSN AZ.
  • The USC Trojans will trek north to take on the California Golden Bears.  Both teams hope to halt their one game losing streak.  USC junior player Taj Gibson currently leads the Pac-10 in blocks with 224.  California junior forward Jamal Boykin has made 16 of his last 18 free throws.  Look for the hoops to start flying at 7:30 p.m. on CSN W.
  • The nationally ranked UCLA Bruins pays a visit to the Stanford Cardinals.  Both teams hope to end a one and two game skid, respectively.  UCLA senior center Alfred Aboya, fresh off a bout with the flu, posted two double-doubles against the Washington universities.  Stanford junior forward Landry Fields has been hot as well, averaging 16.8 points a game and 7 rebounds for his last five.  And this game has a 7:30 p.m. tip time in Palo Alto.
WFG-sponsored Pac-10 basketball continues on Saturday, Feb. 28:
  • Arizona versus Washington for a Noon contest on FSN
  • Arizona State versus Washington State at 2 p.m. on FSN NW/FSN AZ
  • USC versus Stanford at 5 p.m.
  • UCLA versus California at 6p.m. on ESPN

And the lone Pac-10 game on Sunday, March 1 will be a contest for the 33rd state of the USA as the Oregon State Beavers travel to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks.  Both teams hope to build on their three and one game win streaks, respectively.  The OSU defense held Stanford’s top two scorers to three points between them.  Oregon has home court advantage on their side, as OSU hasn’t won in Eugene since the 1992-93 season.  This game tips off at 7 p.m. with TV coverage provided by FSN.

This week’s Pac-10 Player of the Week is Washington State’s senior guard Taylor Rochestie.  Taylor had a career day against UCLA with 33 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and two steals.  This is his first P.O.W. award from the Pac-10. Congratulations go out to this fine student athlete from all of us at World Financial Group.

USA Luge Racing Continues

Posted: 19. February 2009 04:58
Author:

Hey!  Do you read Sports Illustrated?  If you do, then you know that the issue for the week of Feb. 16 has three pictures of the World Financial Group-sponsored USA Luge team.  On pages eight and nine, in the “Leading Off” section, Erin Hamlin is featured in an action shot on her luge along with an insert of her crossing the finish line in victory at the Luge World Championships that took place at Lake Placid, NY last week.  And on page 20, in “Newsmakers,” Erin is featured again, along with doubles team members Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin in their own action shot from the World Champions.  A brief article accompanies these pictures with quotes from all three team members.

But there was no rest after their triumphant showing on the track last weekend.  Our USA Luge team continued their season this past Friday and Saturday in Calgary, AB for the penultimate race of the season.

Representing the WFG-sponsored USA Luge on the women’s side is newly crowned world champion Erin.  She wore the yellow World Champion’s bib (their words, not mine).  Alas, she placed seventh with a time of 1:35.806, a mere 0.628 seconds behind Germany’s Tatjana Hüfner, who took home gold.  Also sliding with Erin were teammates Ashley Walden (1:36.162 for the 11th spot) and Anastasia Young (1:36.775 for 16th place).

For the Men’s team, Bengt Walden built on his best ever international finish.  His 1:31.273 also was his best-ever run last week in Lake Placid.  For the competition in Calgary, he finished in seventh place.  In fact, he has placed in the top ten over his last six international races.  Way to go Bengt!  US teammates Chris Mazdzer and Tony Benshoof slid to 20th and 21st place, respectively.

In doubles competition, World Cup medalists Mark and Brian slid for a ninth place finish.  Their teammates Christian Niccum and Dan Joye (who was battling a high fever) came slightly ahead of Mark and Brian with an eighth place finish.  They were joined by Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall, who slid to 15th place in their first race this season.

Over Valentine’s Day weekend the Junior USA Luge team received some love as well.  The Junior World Championship Team Competition found US teammates Robbie Huerbin, Kate Hansen, Trent Matheson and Taylor Morris sliding to a silver medal in Nagano, Japan.  Their relay time of 2:26.116 was a mere 0.315 seconds behind gold medalist team from Germany.  In the photo below, from Gordon Sheer from USA Luge, you can make out the World Financial Group logo on Robbie’s coat.

The Luge season ends this coming weekend at Whistler, BC in the World Cup Finale.  Your friends at WFG wish you all the best!

WFG Report: The Alberta Boston Pizza Cup

Posted: 19. February 2009 04:53
Author:

World Financial Group-sponsored Ferbey 4 competed in the 2009 Alberta Boston Pizza Cup in Wainwright this past weekend.  This curling tournament determines the champion of Alberta and who would represent Alberta in the ever important Tim Horton’s Brier in two weeks.

In the beginning, it was easy sailing for Randy, Marcel, Scott and David.  Their first draw was against the rink of Kurt Balderson of the Sexsmith Curling Club.  In early action Thursday, Randy and the guys fell behind, but they came back with the hammer to take a 7-4 victory.  Ten ends were needed, but they got the job done.

A little later in the day, the men sporting the WFG curling shirts faced fellow Edmontonian Kevin Koe and his team.  And this game was decided rather early.  Only six ends were needed for the 6-2 Ferbey 4 victory.

But our guys would not be the first all-out qualifier of the tournament.  At the end of competition Thursday, Randy and his rink faced their cross-town rival Kevin Martin.  Despite taking the early lead and having the hammer, Kevin’s rink took the seventh, eighth and ninth ends to secure the 8-5 win over our guys.

There was good news, however, as Randy, Marcel, Scott and David were pre-qualified based on their previous wins on the Alberta Curling Tour.  That meant our World Financial Group “Kings of Canadian Curling” continued in the tournament later on Friday against the Calgary-based rink of Dean Ross.  The Ferbey 4 had the hammer in this match and, over eight ends, won by a score of 10-3.  And in the last draw on Friday, Randy and his rink once again faced Kevin Koe and his team and won by a score of 9-5.  Their victories on Friday made our curlers from Edmonton the second qualifier in the tournament!

On Saturday, the WFG-sponsored Ferbey 4 rink had their first championship bout against Kevin Martin.  In what was called the “page one-two” game, Kevin squeaked by Randy with a 6-5 win.  But in their second game of the finals, Randy, Scott, Marcel and David took on Sherwood Park’s James Pahl and won that game 7-6.  The Ferbeys had the hammer and needed all ten ends to win.

That meant the championship match was decided.  And, once again, Randy and the guys would face Kevin Martin.  Kevin had won against Randy twice this past weekend.  Would Randy put a stop to Kevin’s winning?  Alas, despite a valiant effort, Kevin Martin and his rink won 7-3.

But our guys are not done this year by a long shot.  The Ferbey 4 will return in the Canada Cup of Curling on March 18-22.  And look for more coverage of our own curling rink here from your friends at World Financial Group.

Pac-10 Women’s Basketball Report by WFG- President's Day Weekend

Posted: 13. February 2009 07:11
Author:

Now is the time in the basketball season that thoughts turn to March Madness and the various tournaments held across the country.  The Pac-10 is no exception.  Everyone at World Financial Group (WFG) can’t wait for the Women’s Tournament of the WFG-sponsored Pac-10 to start next month.  But before that happens, there’s still plenty regular season left.  This weekend proves to be no different.

But before we get to this week’s games, let’s review last week’s action.  Arizona State hosted games against the Oregon schools and won both of them.  Oregon State was victorious against Arizona, but Arizona held Oregon to only 44 points.  California swept the Washington schools.  Stanford also visited the state of Washington but could only win against Washington (Washington State won their game).  Finally, USC claimed victory over UCLA in a “Battle for Los Angeles”.

Two WFG-sponsored Pac-10 teams find themselves in the top ten in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Top 25.  But what makes this week unique is that both schools occupy the same spot in both polls!  California is the higher ranked at number three.  Stanford isn’t far behind them at number six.  But there’s love for one more Pac-10 team in the AP poll.  Arizona State received votes and, hopefully, may make the top 25 this week.  We at World Financial Group have our fingers crossed for you.

So, what does the Pac-10 hold for Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend?  Four game lead off the action on Thursday, February 12.  All four of these games will tip off at 7 PM local time:
  • The Arizona Wildcats will travel to Los Angeles and take on the UCLA Bruins.  Arizona won their last game while UCLA hopes to end a three game skid.  The Wildcats have improved upon last year’s free throw percentage, scoring 70.8% of the time from the “charity stripe”, compared to 65.2% last year.  The Bruins lead the Pac-10 in steals with an average of 11.0 a game and they rank 25th in the NCAA for that category.  Maybe World Financial Group can sponsor the free throw line.
  • The Arizona State Sun Devils will pay a visit to the USC Trojans.  Both of these teams are working on winning streaks of nine and one games, respectively.  Sun Devil senior guard Briann January was hot to start February with 14 points against Oregon.  Trojan junior center Moniquee Alexander led her teammates with 13 rebounds against UCLA.
  • The Washington Huskies will cross state lines to the north and play the Oregon State Beavers.  The Huskies has dropped their last ten games while Oregon State lost their last one.  Washington junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb went 10 for 12 at the free-throw line against Stanford.  Oregon State sophomore center Alex Mitchell recorded her first double-double of the season against Arizona.
  • The Washington State Cougars visit Eugene to play the Oregon Ducks.  Both teams hope to end their losing streaks of two and three games, respectively.  Washington State senior guard Katie Appleton recently joined the 1,000 career point club against Stanford.  Oregon junior guard Taylor Lilley had to miss most of the game against ASU due to a concussion, but scored seven points in 12 minutes before leaving.

Unfortunately for WFG sports fans, there are no games on Friday, February 13th, for any Pac-10 team.  Whether it is by design or coincidence remains to be seen.  But Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14th, sees:

  • The California Golden Bears visit Palo Alto to take on Stanford.  Both of these teams are neck and neck in the Pac-10 standings and are also nationally ranked.  California senior forward/center Ashley Walker joined a very exclusive club last week by becoming the second lady Golden Bear to earn her 1,000th career rebound.  Cardinal junior forward/center Jayne Appel scored 24 points in 25 minutes against Washington last week.  This game tips off at 8 PM local time with national coverage provided by FSN.
  • Arizona State pays a visit to UCLA for a 2 PM game
  • Washington plays Oregon in Eugene also at 2 PM with coverage provided by CSN NW
  • Washington State takes on Oregon State in Corvallis at 7 PM local time

Sunday, February 15 sees one game.  Arizona will take on USC at noon with TV provided by FSN.

And Pac-10 Player of the Week honors go to USC senior guard Camille LeNoir.  This Los Angeles native recorded her seventh double digit game in eight games.  Her 19 points included three shots from behind the three point arc.  If WFG can’t sponsor the free throw line, how about the three point arc?  That’s something to consider.  Regardless, high fives all around to Camille from your friends at World Financial Group!

Pac-10 Men’s Basketball by WFG: President’s Day

Posted: 13. February 2009 07:06
Author:

No actual World Financial Group-sponsored Pac-10 basketball games will be played on President’s Day.  But that’s okay.  I, along with the sports fans at World Financial Group, am still excited to see Pac-10 men’s basketball any day of the week, holiday or no.  And, if you are in the mood for basketball on a holiday, four games are on the schedule for Valentine’s Day.

Let’s recap last week’s hardwood action.  UCLA was victorious over USC in the “Battle for Los Angeles” and over Notre Dame.  Both Arizona and Arizona State won over both Oregon and Oregon State, and California won both of its games over the Washington schools.  Stanford upset Washington State, but Washington upset Stanford.

Three Pac-10 schools find themselves in the ESPN/USA Today top 25 poll.  UCLA is the highest ranked at 6.  Not too far behind is Arizona State at 18.  Washington almost closes out the top 25 at number 24.  Also receiving votes were California (tied for 37) and Arizona (tied for 40).  However, only two Pac-10 schools are in the AP’s top 25.  UCLA is looking into the top ten at number 11.  Arizona State is 18 again.  However, Washington (at 27) and California (32) have been relegated to “receiving votes.”  If it were up to us at WFG, we’d put you in that poll.

This week’s hoops action started with one game on Tuesday, February 10.  The Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners visited Palo Alto to take on the Stanford Cardinals.  CSU Bakersfield hoped to snap a two game losing streak while Stanford is fresh off a defeat by the hands of Washington.  Although the team lost against Washington, Cardinal junior forward Landry Fields scored a career high 22 points and had 10 rebounds for his third double-double this season.  CSU Bakersfield hopes to avenge their loss to Stanford almost ten years ago.  However, Stanford owned the hardwood 85-50 and their 11th straight non-conference victory.

On Thursday, February 12, everyone at World Financial Group will be following these games:

  • The Oregon Ducks pay a visit to Pullman, WA and the Washington State Cougars.  Both teams hope to end their losing streaks of 11 and 3 games, respectively (the Ducks are still looking for their first Pac-10 victory).  Oregon freshman forward Drew Wiley scored a career high 18 points against Arizona last week, including five three-pointers.  Washington State freshman forward Klay Thompson averaged 17.3 points per game over his last four.  And the game tips off at 7 PM PT.
  • The Oregon State Beavers will make a trip to Seattle to play the Washington Huskies.  Oregon State hopes to snap their two game losing streak while Washington hopes to build on their one win.   The Beavers’ defense has only allowed 54.5 points per game over their last four.  The Huskies will play six of their final eight games at home, where they are 12-1.  Look for the hardwood to heat up at 8 PM PT with TV provided by FSN NW.
  • Two nationally ranked teams will play as the UCLA Bruins will cross state lines and visit the Arizona State Sun Devils.  UCLA still leads the Pac-10 while Arizona State is only a game and a half behind them.  UCLA senior center Alfred Aboya is averaging 14.5 points over his last four games.  Arizona State coach Herb Sendek will coach his 500th game for the Sun Devils and recently became the second youngest active coach with 300 Division I wins (way to go, Coach Sendek!).  This 7 PM start will be seen on ESPN.
  • The USC Trojans will visit the Arizona Wildcats.  While USC hopes not to lose two in a row, Arizona is building on five wins in a row.  USC junior guard Dwight Lewis has scored double digits in 16 out of 20 games this season, including a 20 point performance against UCLA last week.  Arizona junior forward Chase Budinger has had only six turnovers in his past five games, compared to averaging 20.2 points in that span.  FSN will televise this 8:30 PM local time game
And, as mentioned, four games will be played on Valentine’s Day (but none on Friday the 13th; is it a coincidence?).  WFG sports fans will be following:
  • The Stanford Cardinals will travel to Berkeley to play the California Golden Bears.  California is on a two game win streak, led by junior guards Patrick Christopher and Jerome Randle.  Both these gentlemen scored their 1,000th career point in the same game versus Washington State last week.  This game will tip off at 2 PM PT on FSN
  • Oregon tips off against Washington at 12 noon on FSN
  • UCLA visits Arizona at 11 AM PT on a CBS televised game
  • Oregon State will travel to Washington State for a 4 PM PT game on FSN NW

And Sunday, February 15 sees USC travel to Arizona State for an 8 PM local tip on FSN.  Apparently, men’s college basketball will leave the greater Los Angeles area for President’s Day.

Finally, everyone at World Financial Group is proud of UCLA senior center Alfred Aboya.  His performances against USC and Notre Dame have earned him the Pac-10 Player of the Week award.  In fact, he’s scored double figures in four straight games.  Way to go Alfred!

USA Luge Update from WFG

Hooray for Erin Hamlin! The USA Luge team entered the 41st Federation International De Luge De Course World Cup in Lake Placid, NY with hopes of winning gold and making progress towards qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. And when it was all over, the World Financial Group-sponsored team had members on the medal stand more than once.

In the women’s competition, Erin fought migraine headaches while training over the weekend to slide for a combined 1:28.098 and the Women’s Gold Medal. This is the first since 1993 that a woman not from Germany has taken the top of the medal stand. And while Erin may be reaching for some painkillers in the days to come, she looks forward to defending her world title. As she told usaluge.org, “It will take a lot to stay up here but who knows, anything can happen.” Germany’s Natalie Geisenberger did win silver with a combined run of 1:28.285 (only 0.187 seconds behind Erin) while the Ukraine’s Natalia Yakushenko slid for Bronze with a total time of 1:28.334.

Erin’s teammates on the women’s team also had good showings. Julia Clukey finished fifth with a time of 1:28.662 and Ashley Walden slid to seventh place with a time of 1:28.844. Also sliding was Anastasia Young, in her world championship debut. She finished 14th with a total time of 1:29.626. Everyone at WFG extends a big “high five” to our women’s luge team!

In double’s competition, the US duo of Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin have placed in the top ten consistently all season. But this sliding duo has always set their sights high. This weekend in Lake Placid was no exception as Mark and Brian slid to a combined time of 1:27.611, which was enough to win them the Bronze Medal in the World Championships. This is their first international luge medal in two years. Italy’s Gerhard Plankensteiner and Oswald Hasselrieder won gold with a 1:27.401 run and Germany’s Andre Florschütz claimed the silver with a total time of 1:27.458. Mark and Brian weren’t alone in the top ten, US wise. The team of Christian Niccum and Daniel Joye slid for a sixth place finish. Also finishing in the top ten were Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall for ninth. All of us at World Financial Group applaud your finishes.

And we at WFG would be remiss if we didn’t mention the men’s team. Bengt Walden’s race was a personal best. His combined slides of 1:45.242 were enough to put him in sixth place. Bengt is only in his second season with the USA Luge team. Christopher Mazder placed 14th at 1:45.981. Teammate Tony Benshoof, fresh off of his back surgery, placed 18th with a 1:46.163 combined while Robby Huerbin, another team member in their first world championship race, finished with a 1:46.318 time, good for 21st place.

In the relay, the combined efforts of Bengt, Erin, Mark and Brian totaled 2:44.084, good enough for sixth place. Germany took the gold. But everyone at World Financial Group eagerly awaits more luge action over Valentine’s Day weekend in Calgary and the following weekend in Whistler, BC. Be sure to visit usaluge.org for more information on the fastest sport on ice.

WFG Reports on Pac-10 Women’s Basketball

Posted: 13. February 2009 06:53

We at World Financial Group (WFG) have been following the action on the hardwood as January has turned into February in the women’s Pac-10.  Eventually, February will turn into March, which is supposed to get really mad.  Everyone talks about “March Madness,” but how do you experience it?  When I figure it out, I’ll let you know.  On average, the women of the WFG-sponsored Pac-10 have played twenty games so far this season.  On average, nine games remain for each team until the tournament starting March 12. Last week’s action proved to be quite exciting.  California and Stanford took games from USC and UCLA, extending their win streaks to ten and four games, respectively (oh, I must resist any trucker puns).  Arizona State swept the Washington schools while on its seven game win streak, but Washington State was able to pull to win at home against Arizona.  Meanwhile, in a battle for Oregon Hoops Supremacy, Oregon State topped Oregon by nineteen points. In the polls, two Pac-10 teams have taken up space in the top ten.  California finds itself at number 3 in the AP and number 5 in the ESPN/USA Today top 25.  Stanford comes in at 7 (AP) and 8 (USA Today).  World Financial Group congratulates these two fine times and hope to see more WFG-sponsored Pac-10 teams in these polls soon. The week’s action began on Thursday, February 5.
  • In the first game, the Oregon Ducks traveled to Arizona State to take on the Sun Devils.  Oregon sophomore forward Ellie Manou had 12 points against Oregon State and a team best five rebounds.  Arizona State senior guard Dymond Simon scored 14 points against Washington State and another 17 against Washington.  Arizona State’s home hardwood proved lucky for the Sun Devils as they won 68-56
  • The second game that day has the Oregon State Beavers visiting the Arizona Wildcats.  Oregon State senior guard Brittney Davis scored 16 points against Oregon.  Arizona junior guard Ashley Frazier has averaged 39.8 minutes of playing time this season.  Oregon State was victorious by a score of 63-55
On Friday, February 6, WFG and other Pac-10 sports fans followed these games:
  • The California Golden Bears paid a visit to Seattle to play the Washington Huskies.  California senior forward/center Devanei Hampton had a double-double against UCLA last week with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Washington junior guard Christina Rozier had her first career double-double against Arizona with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  California dominated all evening and left Seattle with a 70-40 win
  • The Stanford Cardinals traveled to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars.  Stanford defense has limited opponent’s shooting to 33% or less ten times this season.  Washington State senior guard Katie Appleton scored her 1,000th career point last week, becoming the 12th WSU player to do so.  Washington State held their ground and handed Stanford a 76-46 loss

On Saturday, February 7, Oregon visited Arizona for a game televised on FSN.  Arizona won 68-44.  Oregon State took on Arizona State on FSN  This game was a little closer, but Arizona State took this one 65-44.  Sunday, February 8 saw Stanford visit Washington on FSN.  Stanford won 76-54.  California visited Washington State and won 77-57.

That leaves UCLA and USC.  Did they play this past week?  They most certainly did.  Their lone game was against each other on Sunday.  Both teams looked to snap their respective two game losing streaks.  Bruin sophomore guard Doreena Campbell scored 13 points against California and another 11 against Stanford.  Trojan senior guard Camille LeNoir scored 18 points opposite California.  And USC has earned the right to be called “the leaders of Los Angeles”.  They won 87-76

The WFG-sponsored Pac-10 Player of the Week is Arizona State junior guard Dymond Simon.  In addition to her performance last week against the Washington teams, she has also lead Arizona State in scoring for the last five games averaging 17.2 points a game.  And we at World Financial Group have to mention that she’s a double major in communication and sociology.  Way to go Dymond!
