World Financial Group’s new curling team – Randy Ferbey, Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols and Ryan Fry – began its 2010-11 Grand Slam of Curling season at the Grey Power World Cup in Windsor, Ontario, Nov.3.  How would our new team fare?

The first opponent for WFG’s new curling rink was Kevin Park’s rink out of Winnipeg.  Randy, Brad, Mark and Ryan had the hammer and used it to win 5-1 in only six ends.  Brad had the team’s best accuracy rating with 93%.  Up next for Randy and the guys was Jake Higgs’s rink from Harriston, Ontario.  Once again in possession of the hammer, our men in the WFG curling jackets took this one 7-2 in six ends.  It was Brad again who led the team in scoring with 85%.

The third match of the World Cup wasn’t the charm for Team Ferbey, though.  Jeff Stoughton and his rink from Winnipeg drove our guys to eight ends, but took this match by a score of 6-4.  Ryan scored the best accuracy for our rink with 90%.  In our rink’s fourth match, our guys found themselves in fine form opposite Dale Matchett and his rink from Bradford, Ontario.  The WFG rink had the hammer and used it to win 7-6 in eight ends.  Ryan led in accuracy across the board with 99%!

Alas, the winning could not carry into the end of the round robin.  Facing Edmonton’s Kevin Koe, our guys fell 8-2.  Ryan scored best accuracy with 94%.

In the tie-breaker round, our guys faced Pat Simmons from Regina, SK.  And in a very close match, needing eight ends, we took victory and a trip to the quarterfinals by a score of 5-4.  Brad’s 95% accuracy score was the best for our team.

The quarterfinals would see a familiar face: Jeff Stoughton.  And while we were able to score four rocks, Jeff proved to be the better rink with five.  Brad’s accuracy of 88% led our team.  Stoughton’s rink would make it to the final and lose to Mike McEwen from Winnipeg.

Up next for Team Ferbey is the Sun Life Financial Invitational Curling Classic on Nov. 19.  We wish our WFG curling team continued success this season and keep reading wfgsports.com for the latest curling action!
